Clinical Waste Pressures Across Greater Manchester's Health Economy

Greater Manchester runs one of the busiest health systems in England. Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is often described as the largest NHS trust in the UK. It runs ten hospitals, including Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe Hospital, North Manchester General Hospital and the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

Health services are planned by NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board, which covers all ten boroughs. The Oxford Road Corridor adds a dense research cluster, with the University of Manchester, Manchester Science Park and the Citylabs health innovation campus beside Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Outside the hospital estate sits a wide network of smaller producers. GP practices, dental surgeries, pharmacies, care homes, vets and aesthetics clinics all create clinical or offensive waste every week. Their volumes are smaller, but their legal duties are exactly the same.

Every producer must segregate waste in line with HTM 07-01, store it securely and pass it only to a licensed carrier. We provide licensed collection and compliant treatment, along with hazardous waste consignment notes and full Duty of Care documentation, so you have a record for every collection, from your site through to treatment.

Who We Work With

Clinical Waste Producers We Support in Greater Manchester

We work with organisations of every size across the ten boroughs, from sole practitioners to regional groups.

GP and Dental Practices

Surgeries in Salford, Stockport, Bolton and beyond produce sharps, infectious dressings and dental amalgam. The University Dental Hospital of Manchester trains many future dentists, and the practices they join need the same compliant routines.

Care and Nursing Homes

Care settings from Bury to Tameside generate offensive hygiene waste, incontinence products and part-used medicines. Correct segregation by your staff at source keeps disposal costs and compliance risk under control.

Life Science and University Labs

Research teams along the Oxford Road Corridor and at Manchester Science Park produce cultures, contaminated plastics and sharps. We collect laboratory waste under the correct waste codes, with clear, traceable records for each consignment.

Tattoo, Piercing and Aesthetics Studios

Studios across the city centre and the wider conurbation that offer tattoos, piercing or injectable treatments produce needles, contaminated gloves and filler waste. Even a single chair business needs a licensed collection route.

How It Works

Clinical Waste Collection in Four Steps

A simple setup with compliance built in from the first collection.

Tell Us What You Produce

Share your waste streams, rough volumes and site details so we can match each stream to the right collection and treatment route.

Have Your Waste Ready

Keep each stream in its own compliant, correctly labelled container in a secure storage area, ready for collection.

Scheduled Collections

Collections are planned around your site, access and volumes, from a single practice to a multi-site estate.

Every collection comes with a hazardous waste consignment note and the records you need to show Duty of Care.

Your Questions, Answered

If your Manchester business produces sharps, infectious waste, medicines or hygiene waste, you need a licensed collection. Typical clinical waste producers include GP and dental practices, pharmacies, care homes, private clinics, vets, laboratories, tattoo studios and aesthetics clinics. Occupational health providers and event medical teams also produce clinical waste and carry the same Duty of Care.

Follow the HTM 07-01 colour codes. Use orange bags for infectious waste that can be treated and yellow for infectious waste that needs incineration. Tiger bags take offensive waste such as incontinence pads. Purple-lidded containers hold cytotoxic medicines, blue-lidded containers other medicines and red-lidded containers anatomical waste. Keep sharps in sharps bins with the correct lid colour.

Every hazardous collection needs a consignment note, which you must keep for at least three years. Offensive and other non-hazardous waste moves on a waste transfer note, kept for at least two years. You also need to check that your carrier holds a valid licence. We send the right documents with every collection, so your Duty of Care file stays complete.

Yes. We collect from businesses in Manchester, Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Tameside, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, Bolton and Wigan. That makes it simple for practice groups, care home operators and clinic chains with sites spread across the city region. One provider, one set of documents and one point of contact for every site.

We agree a regular collection schedule with you, whether weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Your site should have its own compliant, correctly labelled colour-coded containers for each stream and a secure area to store them between visits. We bring the licensed collection and the consignment notes and Duty of Care records. If your volumes rise, for example during a vaccination programme, we can add extra collections.

No. We only collect clinical waste from businesses. If you live in Manchester and need sharps or other clinical waste collected from home, contact Manchester City Council or the council for your borough. Your GP, pharmacist or community nurse can also advise on getting a sharps bin and returning it.
