Solar Panel Recycling
Solar energy is becoming an increasingly popular green energy source across the UK. It is extremely important, however, to ensure that solar panels are responsibly recycled when they reach their end of life. Recycling solar panels not only provides raw materials for repurposing and reprocessing but it maximises the efficiency of your solar energy system. Solar panels (also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels) are defined as e-waste in the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. The PV panel waste management is thus regulated by this directive, additionally to other legal frameworks.
The solar panel recycling process begins with the collection of damaged or end of life solar panels. Waste Experts provide a nationwide collection service for all types of PV panels including monocrystalline, polycrystalline and thin-film amorphous, plus all associated circuitry and connectors. Our advanced fleet of vehicles can collect anything from a single PV panel right through to a full artic load or solar farm clearance.
Once the panels are collected, they are transported to our state-of-the-art Approved Authorised Treatment Facility (AATF) in Huddersfield. We are fully equipped to achieve the maximum recycling and recovery rates for PV panels through our unique mechanical treatment process, whereby we extract the silver, silicon and other high-value materials from the used panels. It is estimated that approximately 8 million tons of decommissioned solar panels could accumulate globally by 2030. Therefore by offering a recycling service of these panels Waste Experts can provide a new source for materials that would otherwise need to be mined, making solar an even more sustainable piece of the clean-energy puzzle.
unrivalled collection network
How can waste experts help?
Waste Experts are the only UK Approved Authorised Treatment Facility (AATF) facility who have achieved the recycling targets set by the Environment Agency (EA) to be able to raise evidence on solar panels. We have the largest collection capabilities in the UK, with our fleet ranging from small vans for inner city requirements, right through to articulated lorries for large solar farm clearances, plus every size vehicle in between. This means we have the flexibility to collect from any location in the UK.
Innovative treatment processes
Solar Panel Recycling
As the adoption of solar energy continues to surge as a prominent green energy solution throughout the UK, the necessity of establishing a reliable waste management system for solar panels reaching the end of their photovoltaic (PV) life cycle becomes ever more apparent. Failing to implement effective recycling programs and safe disposal methods would result in a looming challenge for future generations. Embracing the practice of recycling renewable technology not only makes practical sense but also brings about a plethora of significant environmental advantages.
One of the foremost benefits of recycling solar panels with Waste Experts lies in the creation of a practical and sustainable avenue for disposing of solar panels that have fulfilled their useful PV lifespan. By implementing our recycling initiatives, we can ensure that the materials used in these panels are properly treated, preventing their accumulation in landfills and reducing potential environmental hazards.
Moreover, solar panel recycling allows Waste Experts to harness valuable raw materials for repurposing and reprocessing. As we recover materials like silicon, glass, and various metals from decommissioned panels, we lessen our reliance on virgin resources, ultimately decreasing the environmental impact of manufacturing new solar panels. This approach aligns with our comitment to improving the circular economy, where resources are continually reused, promoting a more sustainable and resource-efficient future.
To ensure a smooth and efficient collection process for solar panels, Waste Experts have outlined below our guidelines for safe handling and transportation. It is vital that our customers adhere to the following guidelines meticulously. By following our recommendations, we can facilitate the collection procedure and guarantee the safe transportation of the panels. compliant recycling service
Revolutionising Solar Panel Recycling
With the rising popularity of solar energy as a green power option throughout the UK, we believe it is of growing significance to establish our practical waste management system for solar panels that have reached the end of their photovoltaic (PV) life cycle.
Solar
Panels
We operate throughout the UK collecting damaged (cracked, bent, chipped, shattered) or unwanted solar panels from solar farms and public buildings to commercial and domestic properties.
Solar
Inverters
In the lifetime of a solar installation you will require at least one replacement inverter. We offer a recycling service for inverters when they reach the end of their operational life.
Other Solar Equipment
We support demolition companies and builders who require solar panels to be removed by collecting all associated solar equipment including packaging, rack systems, cable, transformers etc.
Solar Panel Disposal
Through specialised processes, our team of experts efficiently dismantle and recover valuable materials from retired solar panels, promoting sustainable practices and supporting the growth of the renewable energy industry.
How does it work

Our collection process
Presentation of the Panels
To facilitate a smooth and efficient collection process, it is important to present solar panels on a standard double Euro pallet. The standard double pallet provides a stable and secure base for loading and transportation. When preparing the panels for collection, we must strive for uniformity in their arrangement. This entails stacking the panels neatly and ensuring they are centred on the pallet as much as possible.
By following the above guidelines, you optimise the use of space on the pallet, reduce the risk of shifting or sliding during transit, and enhance overall stability. Careful attention to detail in the presentation of the panels ensures that they are securely positioned for transportation. Neatly stacked panels not only make loading and unloading easier but also minimise the chances of damage or breakage during handling.
Secure on Pallet
Our skilled and experienced driver will check to ensure that every pallet is safely secured and neatly packed onto the pallet(s).
banding the panels
To improve stability of the panels during transport our driver will meticulously ensure the banding and strapping of each pallet.
Loading the vehicle
Our driver will load the pallets onto our vehicle. Our vehicle size will be tailored to your individual collection requirements.
what not to do
Due to weight, pallets cannot be double stacked. In the image you can see that the pallet has broken due to the weight. Unity of pallets will keep the load secure.
