Transforming Our Future

Business Value

Waste Experts has formed a valuable partnership with Be On Hand, a platform that enables us to track the impact of our teams and measure our social value. Through the Be On Hand app, we have gained a powerful tool to align our efforts with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and gain a comprehensive understanding of our broader business impact. The Be On Hand app offers us a range of missions and pledges that directly support our chosen SDGs. By selecting these missions, we actively contribute to addressing pressing societal and environmental challenges. Additionally, the app helps us track the specific charities we have assisted, allowing us to measure the positive impact we have made through our contributions.

Moreover, the app enables us to monitor and quantify our volunteering hours, recognising the significant value that our team members bring through their dedication and commitment to making a difference. We also measure our CO2e reductions, ensuring that we actively contribute to mitigating climate change and reducing our carbon footprint. A particularly exciting aspect of our partnership with Be On Hand is the reward system in place for our team. The platform acknowledges and celebrates the good work carried out by our employees by planting trees on behalf of each team member. This initiative not only recognises individual contributions but also promotes a collective sense of achievement and environmental responsibility.

Our team members have already completed a wide range of impactful activities through the Be On Hand app. Some examples include donating surplus food, participating in eco clean-ups to remove litter and waste, adopting reusable carrier bags, creating bird feeders in their gardens to support local wildlife, engaging in peer mentoring, and embracing car sharing initiatives to reduce carbon emissions. These activities reflect our commitment to making positive changes in both our immediate surroundings and the broader community. To encourage and recognise the efforts of our team members, we have established a leadership board to track their progress. This board highlights the top performers, motivating healthy competition and fostering a sense of pride within our organisation. In addition to recognition, we plan to offer prizes and incentives to further inspire and reward the best-performing staff, creating an environment of continuous improvement and positive impact.

Through our partnership with Be On Hand, Waste Experts is empowering its employees to make a tangible difference in line with our sustainability goals. By leveraging the app’s features and engaging in meaningful activities, our team members are actively contributing to social and environmental progress, while also reaping personal rewards and fostering a sense of purpose within our organisation.

Mental health and wellbeing

As proud supporters of #ANDYSMANCLUB, Waste Experts understand the significance of coming together to raise awareness and support those facing mental health challenges. We believe that it is essential to take care of our mental well-being, just as much as our physical health. We actively promote the message of #ItsOkToTalk.

We have invested in Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA) across the business to care for the mental health of our colleagues. Our MFHA’s are expertly trained in spotting the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues, providing non-judgemental support and reassurance, and guiding colleagues to seek professional support if required.

Leadership Programmes

All Supervisors and Managers within Waste Experts have either completed or are working towards Level 3 or 5 ILM Leadership and Management qualification. We are committed to continuing professional development for all our staff and believe the management courses provide them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to stand out as a leader.

We have a promote from within culture whereby all promotion opportunities within the business are offered internally first and we are dedicated to upskilling our people and supporting them with career development. The ILM qualifications help our staff to develop their skills and experience, improve their performance and prepare for further management responsibilities.

Modern Slavery

Waste Experts are committed to the principles of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and the abolition of modern slavery and human trafficking. All our key staff, including those who regularly carry out both customer and supplier site visits, have been trained to understand modern slavery and how to recognise the signs.

Our comprehensive training was further rolled-out to preferred suppliers, helping to raise awareness so that improvements can be made to make it more difficult for traffickers to infiltrate their businesses. We will continue to make every effort to eradicate modern slavery in our industry. For our latest policy click here.

Sustainable Supply Chains

Wherever possible we will procure ethically, sustainably and locally, investing in local suppliers of materials and local labour resources. While we aim to always support SMEs and local commerce, they must meet our strict compliance criteria to ensure our clients are guaranteed the best service with access to the latest technology and equipment. All of our supply chain partners are required to meet the standards of Waste Experts and align with our commitment to social value. This includes signing up to ethical trading standards, modern slavery and committing to real living wage amounts.

Supporting Our NHS

Waste Experts have chosen to partner with County Durham & Darlington NHS Trust Charity (CDDFT) to help enhance patient care and wellbeing in the local area. As a leading employer we recognise that the work delivered by CDDFT Charity supports our staff as well as the wider community and with our extensive network we can help make a real difference to the charity. We are empowering the NHS charity by engaging with our staff, customers and suppliers to help us with fundraising activities. From seasonal fundraisers, to pyjama and toiletries donations and volunteering time, together Waste Experts and NHS Charities can deliver real impact for the community, colleagues and customers.
