What is vape recycling and why does it matter?
Vape recycling is the safe collection, hand dismantling, and material recovery from used disposable vapes, refillable e-cigarettes, vape pods and heated tobacco devices. From 12 August 2025, vapes have their own dedicated WEEE category (Category 15) under the UK WEEE Regulations. They must never be placed in general waste, as they contain lithium-ion batteries, nicotine residue and electronics that are both hazardous and recoverable. Any business placing vapes on the UK market or selling them has a legal Duty of Care to ensure proper recycling through an Authorised Approved Treatment Facility (AATF).
What types of vapes and e-cigarettes can you recycle?
We recycle the full range of vaping products including disposable single-use vapes (now banned from sale but still in the waste stream), refillable pod devices, e-cigarette starter kits, vape pods and cartridges, heated tobacco devices, USB charging accessories, and bulk producer or distributor stock, including counterfeit, seized and recalled product. Whatever the condition, we collect, hand dismantle, and recover the materials safely.
What compliance documentation do I get with vape recycling?
Every vape recycling collection includes a Waste Transfer Note, a Hazardous Waste Consignment Note (vapes are hazardous waste in the UK), Duty of Care documentation, and a Certificate of Recycling. We retain all records for the four-year statutory period to support audits, ESG reporting, B Corp evidence, and producer take-back obligations under WEEE Category 15. Are vapes classed as hazardous waste?
Yes. Used vapes are classified as hazardous waste in the UK because they contain lithium-ion batteries, nicotine residue, traces of vape liquid and trace heavy metals. They cannot lawfully be disposed of in general waste, mixed dry recycling, or even mixed WEEE bins. They must be collected separately, transported under hazardous waste rules (or ADR for higher volumes), and treated at an AATF. Disposal in general waste breaches the WEEE Regulations 2013, the Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005, and the Special Waste Regulations 1996 (Scotland).
Why hand dismantle vapes instead of shredding them?
Mechanical shredding of vapes is dangerous and increasingly avoided across the industry. Lithium-ion batteries puncture easily during shredding, which can trigger thermal runaway and serious facility fires. Hand dismantling is the safest method. Trained operatives carefully separate the battery, electronics, plastic casing and any remaining liquid into clean material streams. Each stream then goes to its appropriate treatment route. The result is safer for workers, safer for facilities, and produces higher-quality recovered material.
