The site generated high volumes of mixed waste and already had on-site equipment in place, but struggled with inefficient waste movements, high landfill reliance, excessive vehicle handling, and rising operational costs - all while needing to maintain full regulatory compliance.
Waste Experts introduced a redesigned waste flow strategy, focusing on pre-loading materials, improving segregation, and redirecting waste higher up the waste hierarchy. Key changes included standing trailers, revised collection regimes, and improved hazardous waste handling.
How We Did It
High volumes of waste were being double-handled, sent to landfill unnecessarily, and moved using inefficient transport methods.
Waste Experts assessed site operations, introduced standing trailers for RDF bales, improved segregation infrastructure, and redirected waste to Energy from Waste and recycling routes while maintaining full Duty of Care.
The primary risks were non-compliance with hazardous waste regulations, inefficient vehicle movements increasing safety exposure, and environmental risk associated with high landfill dependency.
Waste Experts implemented compliant consignment processes for all hazardous waste, introduced UN-approved containers, reduced handling time through pre-loaded trailers, and ensured all waste streams were treated at appropriate, permitted facilities.
The Outcome
As a result of the changes implemented, the manufacturing site significantly improved its waste performance and operational efficiency. Landfill reliance was reduced from 55% to just 2.5% within nine months, with approximately 30 tonnes of material per week diverted to more sustainable treatment routes. Improved waste segregation and pre-loading processes reduced on-site handling time by around four hours per week, minimised vehicle movements, and delivered measurable cost savings across multiple waste streams. All hazardous materials were consigned and treated in full compliance with regulatory requirements, strengthening both environmental performance and Duty of Care assurance.
